The compact sedan segment has seen a rise in demand starting from this decade. Current major players in the segment are Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Ford Figo Aspire and Tata Zest. The ongoing Auto Expo that began on 3 February suggests more new products will join the segment in 2016. Here is the list of new compact sedan showcased at Auto Expo 2016.
Tata Kite 5 (Zica Sedan)
The compact sedan sibling of the Zica hatchback had its global premiere at the Auto Expo with project name Kite 5. It features the new 'Impact' design language of Tata Motors. The face of the compact sedan is similar to the Zica hatchback. The Kite 5 flaunts a chrome line at the front that extends into the dual-chamber headlamps. The car comes with LED tail lamps and an integrated roof spoiler. The Kite 5 will be available with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and 1.05-litre three-cylinder diesel engine. Both engines will be available with multi-drive modes — Eco and City.
Volkswagen Ameo
Volkswagen India's first designed-for and made-in-India compact sedan, the Ameo had its public unveiling at Auto Expo 2016. The Ameo's boot is small and that keeps the car under 4 metres in length. Ameo will be available with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder MPI petrol engine or a 1.5-litre four-cylinder TDI diesel engine. The diesel engine is available with five-speed manual and seven-speed DSG transmission, while the petrol engine will available with only five-speed manual transmission. Volkswagen is planning the market launch of the Ameo in Q2 of 2016.
Chevrolet Beat Essentia
General Motors claims the Beat Essentia and Beat Activ were designed at the GM Korea Design Studio to specifically suit the tastes of the Indian consumer without compromising on global appeal. The Beat Essantia will receive the baton from the Sail sedan, which failed to attract many buyers. The Beat Essentia sedan features a 1.2-litre STEC II engine that is good for 77bhp and 107Nm, while its diesel mill is a 1.0L XSDE unit with 56bhp and 142.5Nm. Chevrolet Beat Essentia's market launch will happen in 2017.
