The Nadigar Sangam, which is also known as the South Indian Film Artistes Association (SIFAA), has big plans for its fundraiser celebrity cricket tournament. After inviting Kollywood bigwigs like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, the actors' guild has now extended an invitation to stars from other industries like Chiranjeevi and Amitabh Bachchan.
"Invitations have been sent to Amitabh Bachchan and Chiranjeevi. We are expecting them to attend the opening ceremony of the tournament," a source told IANS. Stars like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have verbally agreed to attend the tournament April 17.
Around 50 artistes will be part of the event, which will be held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Earlier, it was said that seven teams will participate in the tournament, which was reportedly called as Super Six Star Cricket. The latest report adds that eight teams will take part in the event.
The buzz is that apart from Chiranjeevi and Amitabh, many big names from other film industries are expected to grace the celebrity cricket tournament. The Nadigar Sangam has already invited many South actors, who are a part of Bollywood.
The event is organised by the Nadigar Sangam to raise funds for the construction of its new building. The report adds that the satellite rights of the tournament has already been sold to a leading Tamil TV channel for a whopping Rs 9 crore.
The building of the Nadigar Sangam was demolished a few years ago after the then administration-headed by Sarath Kumar signed an agreement with a private company to lease the land for 30 years. They had sealed the deal despite opposition from many members in the association.
Eventually, it became a major issue in the last election of the actors' guild, in which ruling Sarath Kumar's team lost the poll. The present officer bearers, who had opposed the deal, cancelled the agreement soon after coming to the power.
