"Chennai Express" has become the second Hindi film ever to cross the ₹200 crore mark in India after "3 Idiots". The romantic comedy, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, has been declared an all time blockbuster by crossing the double century mark in just two weeks of its release.
In its second week, the film raked in ₹43.85 crore taking its two-week domestic total to ₹200.55 crore.
"#ChennaiExpress collects ₹43.85 cr in Week 2: Fri 6.50 cr, Sat 8.51 cr, Sun 10.22 cr, Mon 3.80 cr, Tue 7.06 cr, Wed 4.51 cr, Thu 3.25 cr," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.
After Aamir Khan, now SRK has entered the coveted ₹200 crore club. "Chennai Express" has shattered records of Salman's 2012 release "Ek Tha Tiger", whose lifetime collection stands at ₹198.78 crore.
"Chennai Express" has become Bollywood's second highest grosser ever released in Indian markets. Although the film hit the double century mark, it has yet not shattered "3 Idiots" record.
The film requires more than ₹2 crore to gain the top position in the domestic collections chart. The film also failed to break the second week record of "3 Idiots" that stands at approximately ₹55.79 crore.
The top three films in terms of box office collections is "3 Idiots" with ₹202.47 crore, "Chennai Express" with ₹200.55 crore and "Ek Tha Tiger" with ₹198.78 crore.
The film is also hitting several records on the overseas front. Rohit Shetty's directorial film has grossed over $ 15.2 million (₹96.98 crore). [Note the Indian figure is based on the current rupee value]
"ChennaiExpress grossed over $ 15.2 million in Oseas... Crosses $ 4.1 million in USA-Canada, AED 13.8 million in Gulf, £ 1.77 million in UK," Adarsh said.
The film produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and UTV Motion Pictures was released on 9 August in more than 4,000 screens worldwide.
