"Chennai Express" has become third highest grosser film ever in the overseas market, taking down Shah Rukh Khan starrer "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" from its fourth position.
The romantic comedy has raked in approximately ₹89.40 crore ($ 14.16 million) from its 10-day theatrical run at the overseas box office. Despite the release of new film "Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai Dobaara", the SRK-Deepika Padukone starrer maintained a strong position.
Rohit Shetty's directed film was released on 9 August across 700 screens overseas. After finishing its second weekend run, the action comedy became the third highest grosser film in the international market, after Aamir Khan's 2009 film "3 Idiots" with $25,000,000, followed by SRK's 2010 release "My Name is Khan" with $23,000,000.
"Chennai Express" has taken down last year's release "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" and "Don 2" to gain the third spot. "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" directed by the late Yash Chopra raked in ₹74.5 crore ($13.54 million) in seven weeks.
According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film raked in ₹15.91 crore (£ 1,624,714) from the UK, ₹25.02 crore ($ 3,963,000) from US-Canada, ₹3.86 crore (A$ 669,085) from Australia, ₹22.17 crore (AED 1,28,55,350) from UAE-GCC, ₹3.21 crore ($ 507,000) from Singapore, and ₹1.14 crore (NZ$ 224,175) from New Zealand after the second weekend.
