Chelsea was defeated by Manchester United in a controversial match on Sunday which was marred by two red cards, a controversial offside goal and allegations of racist comment from the referee.
It looked like Manchester United would pull off again on Wednesday too, but a resilient Chelsea fought brilliantly against their arch rivals to book a spot in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Ryan Giggs opened account for Manchester in the 22nd minute after Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech made a blunder by playing a short pass to Romeu. David Luiz found an equiliser in the 31st minute after Chelsea won a spot kick from Alexander Buttner's tuckle against Victor Moses.
Javier Hernandez put Manchester United in the lead again in the 42nd minute by scoring a goal from Anderson's pass but Gary Cahill leveled the score just a few minutes into the second half with a beautiful header.
It was raining goals as Nani put Manchester United ahead again in the 59th minute by sending the ball into Cech's net from Anderson's pass.
And when it looked like the game was all over, Chelsea earned a spot kick during extra time after Scott Wootton brought down Ramires inside the box, which Eden Hazard converted, thus taking the game to extra time.
Three goals were scored in the 30-minute extra time play. Daniel Sturridge and Ramires scored a goal apiece to increase Chelsea's score to 5. Giggs pulled back another goal by converting a spot kick in the 120th minute after Hernandez was brought down by Azpilicueta, and the final score stood at 5-4.
