Liverpool will not have it easy on their return to the Champions League after finding themselves in the same group as holders Real Madrid, while Manchester City and Arsenal were also given tricky draws.
Barcelona will have difficult opposition to negotiate as well, with Chelsea given what looks like being one of the more straightforward groups.
Bayern Munich and Manchester City will again face off in the group stages after their trials and tribulations last season, with CSKA Moscow also joining them one more time along with Serie A giants Roma.
Group E does look like being a really difficult one to negotiate for Bayern, who will want to get back to the Champions League final after falling at the semifinal hurdle last season. Manchester City seem to attract difficult draws, regardless of what pot they find themselves in, and getting Roma, the team that everyone wanted to avoid from Pot 4, has just made Group E possibly the most competitive.
"Last season Bayern Munich were first, we were second and we also played CSKA Moscow, but the fourth one was very tough, a very strong team in Roma," City's director of football Txiki Begiristain told the club's official website.
"All the clubs try to play good football, Roma have done very well and we are familiar with Bayern Munich. It will be an amazing group."
Group B will also be one to keep an eye on with Real Madrid set to face off against Liverpool, who are back in the Champions League after five years. Joining Real Madrid, the champions from last season, after their dramatic win over Atletico Madrid in the final, and Liverpool in Group B are FC Basel, the team that surprised Chelsea, and newcomers Ludogorets.
"It's a fantastic team, last year they very nearly won the Premier League," said Real superstar and former Manchester United man Cristiano Ronaldo about facing Liverpool after winning UEFA Best Player in Europe award. "We know it's going to be a very tough game at their home [ground] so it will be tough but I think in the general group is nice and I think it's going to be good for Real Madrid."
Chelsea have been given a pretty comfortable-looking group, with Schalke, Sporting Lisbon and NK Maribor being the other three teams.
Arsenal are not a part of the Group of Death this time around, but they certainly do not have it easy, having drawn Borussia Dortmund, yet again in the group stages, with Turkish giants Galatasaray and Belgian side Anderlecht filling the other two spots.
Barcelona are also in an intriguing group alongside PSG, Ajax and APOEL Nicosia, while last year's runners-up Atletico will have Serie A champions Juventus, Olympiakos and Malmo for company.
Group A: Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Olympiakos, Malmo.
Group B: Real Madrid, FC Basel, Liverpool, Ludogorets.
Group C: Benfica, Zenit St. Petersburg, Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco.
