Barcelona and Bayern Munich got off to a terrific start in the Champions League, as they thrashed Celtic 7-0 and FC Rostov 5-0 respectively in the opening day of the competition. While Napoli and Atletico Madrid emerged victorious, Arsenal were held by Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
Lionel Messi bagged headlines with an incredible performance against Celtic, scoring a brilliant hat-trick at Camp Nou. Besides Messi, Suarez scored a second half brace to continue his goal-scoring record. Messi, who opened the goal-scoring for Barcelona in the third minute, was a constant threat and gave their home fans a reason to cheer after their loss to Alaves in the La Liga.
If they can maintain this goal-scoring form, Barcelona are going to be a team to beat in the Champions League. Talking about goals, Bayern Munich were consistent throughout the match, asking questions to FC Rostov, who could not stop the German team.
Defender Joshua Kimmich scored a brace while Roberto Lewandowski, Thomas Muller and Juan Bernat scored a goal each.
Though Barcelona and Bayern cruised to victories, Napoli and Atletico Madrid had to get their A game out to defeat Dynamo Kyiv and PSV Eindhoven, respectively.
Napoli showed some character to come back for 0-1 down to win the match 2-1. Dynamo Kyiv took the lead in the 26th minute with Denys Garmash scoring in the 26th minute. Napoli responded brilliantly, with two goals from striker Arkadiusz Milik in the last ten minutes of the first half, which helped them emerge victorious.
Atletico also earned three points from their first game, but were strongly tested by PSV Eindhoven. Saul Niguez's strike in the 43rd minute proved to be the winning goal for the Spanish side.
Arsenal-PSH clash proved to be entertaining after Edinson Cavani helped the French side to a blistering start as he scored the first goal, 42 seconds after the first whistle. The striker could have in fact scored much more had he been clinical in his finishing. Arsenal took advantage of that, and drew level with Alexis Sanchez scoring in the 78th minute.
Elsewhere, Benfica and Besiktas played out a 1-1 draw, and FC Basel's clash with Ludogorets ended with the same scoreline.
The scheduled match between Manchester City and Borussia Mönchengladbach could not be played due to dangerous pitch conditions after some thunderstorm. It has been rescheduled for Wednesday.
