It was art house darlings that lead the way at the 87th Academy Awards nominations.
‘Birdman’ and ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ picked up nine nominations each including
Best Picture and Best Director. While Michael Keaton received his first nod as
Best Actor for ‘Birdman’, Meryl Streep picked up her 19th nomination for
‘Into The Woods’. J.K. Simmons, who just won the Golden Globe for ‘Whiplash’ is the
front-runner in the Best Supporting Actor category but he’ll have stiff competition
from fellow nominees Robert Duvall, Ethan Hawke, Edward Norton & Mark Ruffalo.
Bradley Cooper nabbed a Best Actor nod, nudging out “Selma’s” David Oyelowo and
“Nightcrawler’s” Jake Gyllenhaal. A notable snub for Best Actress was
Jennifer Aniston for her much praised performance in ‘Cake’.
However the category will be well represented with nods to Felicity Jones,
Rosamund Pike, Reese Witherspoon & Julianne Moore.
Hosted this year by Neil Patrick Harris, the award show will broadcast live on
February 22nd.
