"Castle" season 8 is currently on a midseason break after airing episode 8, titled "Mr & Mrs Castle". ABC will not air any new episode until next year and will return with episode 9, titled "Tone Death", only on 1 February, 2016. While speculations are going wild about second half of season 8, co-showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter have hinted that the series may not be renewed for season 9 and that the current season will be the end of the series.
"The reality is that the network execs won't make that decision until very late. So our plan is just to tell a satisfying story and try to wrap up the season in an exciting way," Hawley told TVLine.
The reason why the series' future has come under the scanner is because of the constant drop in its ratings. And this is not the first time the minds behind the show have contemplated of wrapping up the series. The website pointed out that even the show's creator Andrew W Marlowe and writer/wife Terri Edda Miller in an interview in April told that they wanted last season's (season 7) finale to be the last in the series. "We were trying to craft a finale where we had a satisfying conclusion if it is indeed the conclusion, but also some really interesting, compelling springboards into next season's storyteliing — if the gods shine upon us and we're allowed to continue," Marlowe had told.
Having recalled this, Winter in this recent interview said that they may repeat the same drill for season 8 finale as well and make it look like it's the last in the series. "Andrew and Terri wrote it as if it was the series finale and there's a very good chance that we'll most likely be doing that here. We hope to come back for Season 9, but we have to act as if we might not," Winter said.
