An NRI driver reportedly broke the barriers at the Wagah border in an attempt to cross over to Pakistan on Sunday night, according to ANI news agency.
The Border Security Forces (BSF) arrested the driver, identified as Canadian Surinder Singh Kang, who is said to be originally from Jalandhar. He reportedly wanted to visit the Nankana Sahib shrine in Pakistan.
"Preliminary investigations reveal that he was undergoing psychiatric treatment. He told us that he wanted to pay obeisance at Nankana Sahib, but did not want to wait for the visa and other formalities and adopted the illegal way," a BSF official was quoted saying by the Press Trust of India.
Pakistan's Dunya News reported that an Indian citizen rammed his jeep into the gate at Wagah border, damaging the gate and also 'partly affected the Pakistani gate'.
The Wagah border is the only road crossing between Amritsar in India and Lahore in Pakistan.
Last year, nearly 60 people were killed in a terror attack on the Pakistani side of the Wagah border.
A Car broke barrier and tried to cross the Wagah border late last night. Driver detained by BSF.
