Popular Malayalam film actor Jayasurya, of Lukka Chuppi and Su.. Su... Sudhi Vathmeekam fame, is set to play the life of former Kerala footballer VP Sathyan on the big screen now. It is the first time that the versatile Mollywood personality will be seen in a biopic.
The film, titled Captain, is based on the life of the former footballer, who took Indian football team to greater heights.
Sathyan plied his trade for the Indian football team between 1985 and 1995. He was one of those footballers who brought plenty of laurels for the beautiful game in India, but he got obscured with time. One of the best centre backs during the late 1980s and the early 1990s, Sathyan guided the Kerala Police Football team to two Federation Cup titles in 1989-90 and in 1990-91 and led Kerala to the Santosh Trophy title in 1992 as well.
A leader par excellence, Sathyan, who would have been 51 today, also skippered the India national football team and served as an assistant to current India coach Stephen Constantine, when the Englishman came to coach India for the first time in 2002. He also played for Kolkata clubs Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting in his career.
Everything was going fine till one bad day, owing to his inability to deal with a mountain of financial pressure, Sathyan committed suicide by jumping in front of a suburban electric train at Pallavaram station in Chennai. He was only 41.
"VP Sathyan's life is being made into a film. Many of you might not be aware about him, but he is a legendary football player from Kerala," said Sathyan in a video. "When the director told me that I will be playing the lead role in it, I was super excited. The movie is the production venture of Goodwill entertainment, which has bankrolled many good movies in Malayalam.
"It is a big budget movie and has been titled Captain. I request all your support."
Captain, directed by Prajeesh Sen and produced by T L George under the banner of Goodwill Entertainments, is reportedly set to be a mega-budget film and the most expensive one in the film career of Jayasurya. The release date of the Malayalam movie has not been confirmed as yet, but Jayasurya took to his Facebook page to reveal the poster of the film.
