Canvas Spark Set for India Launch on 21 April; What do we Know so far on Micromax's New Budget Smartphone

Home-bred smartphone-maker Micromax is set to launch an entry-level handset Canvas Spark in India on 21 April.

Going by the intensity of the promotional campaign carried out by company and its official e-commerce affiliate, Snapdeal, for the past few weeks, Micromax is betting high on Canvas Spark to take on the MNC rivals, Xiaomi, Motorola and Lenovo.

All three overseas brands have launched a series of affordable handsets, which are said to be slowly eating away the market share of Micromax, which up until mid-2014, was the sole leader in the budget category.

It is learnt that Micromax Canvas Spark will be aggressively priced under ₹6,000 so that it gives a stiff challenge to these overseas firms and also hopes this new smartphone will re-invigorate the flagship Canvas series, which has lately lost its sheen with the arrival of Xiaomi's Redmi 2, Motorola's Moto E (2 Gen) and Lenovo's A6000 Plus.

According to numerous reports cited in the media, Micromax Spark is said to sport a 4.7-inch screen and run on the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS powered by Mediatek quad-core SoC (System on Chip), expandable memory and house dual-SIM slots.

The latest teaser video of Micromax has indicated the Canvas Spark will boast Gorilla Glass (probably v3.0).

Other key features such as RAM, inbuilt memory, battery capacity and camera are yet to be ascertained. The company has already confirmed that Canvas Spark will be released online exclusively on Snapdeal store by this month end. We will update more details on the new Micromax smartphone as it develops.
