The 66th Cannes Film Festival which is celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema kicked off on 15 May with the screening of Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby".
"The Great Gatsby" marks Amitabh Bachchan debut film in Hollywood. On the opening day, the 71 year-old actor walked the red carpet along with the star cast of "The Great Gatsby" including Leonardo Dicaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and director Luhrmann.
At the opening ceremony of Cannes Film Festival, the megastar of Indian cinema addressed the audience in Hindi. "Acknowledging Cannes in recognising 100 yrs of Indian Cinema, it was absolutely imperative for me to address, in my Mother tongue!" the actor tweeted on Thursday.
During the photo call Amitabh wore a light blue striped jacket with white pants and shoes. While for the main day he wore a black sequined tuxedo jacket, white shirt, a polka-dotted bow tie and black pant.
This year the 11-day film festival holds special importance since its celebrating the 100th anniversary of Indian cinema. More than 15 celebrities from Bollywood and South Indian film industry are expected to attend the event. Also, several films will be screened at the prestigious film festival including "Bombay Talkies" and Anurag Kashyap's "Ugly".
Bollywood diva Vidya Balan, who is in the jury panel, made her first appearance at the film festival on Tuesday, a day before the festival started. She looked gorgeous in a dark brownish-red lehenga high neck choli and black dupatta designed by Sabyasachi Mukherjee.
During a photocall before the opening ceremony Vidya wore an off-white sari with a golden border and a black full sleeved net embroidered blouse. And for the opening ceremony she wore an off-white lehenga with black and golden border, a high-necked black choli and an off-white net embroidered dupatta.
Sonam Kapoor who is the brand ambassador of the cosmetic brand L'Oreal Paris, attended the opening ceremony wearing a traditional Indian outfit. On Wednesday, she pulled off a vinatge look in an off-white sari with intricate gold embroidery, from the Anamika Khanna Couture collection.
On Thursday, she wore a strapless petal blooming Dolce & Gabbana gown for the screening of the film "Jeune & Jolie".
"Slumdog Millionaire" actress Freida Pinto looked beautiful in a pink halter neck Gucci gown with gold beaded belt on it and Chopard jewels.
