The white gyrfalcon, the largest falcon species in the world, was recorded on a live camera at the top of an observation tower at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre on 9 February.

The white gyrfalcon is a rare bird that breeds in arctic and subarctic regions of the northern hemisphere. It preys on large birds by pursuing them in flight, explained Jason Damata from Explore.org.

He added the species is known to inhabit the region in the winter; however they are hardly ever noticed by people. The video shows the extraordinary creature staring at the camera.

Damata said the gyrfalcon has approached the live camera several times over the last couple of weeks. Explore.org is a multimedia organisation also engaged in the production of live cameras focused on filming and photographing nature worldwide.
