South Korean K-pop sensation BTS becomes the first-ever recipient of the Worldwide Icon of the Year award from the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA).
The second ceremony of this year's MAMA was held in Japan on December 12 titled 2018 MAMA Fan's Choice in Japan. BTS won the Worldwide Fan's Choice Top 10 award, the Favourite Music Video award for "Idol" and the Favourite Male Dance Artist award. The final grand prize also known as MAMA Daesang and the Worldwide Icon of the Year award was also swept by BTS boys.
The first part of the three-day event took place at Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul with rookie artists being presented their awards. Eager fans who hoped to have a glimpse of BTS were disappointed as the boys had decided to attend the main day of the event.
MAMA not just felicitates the artists, but also recognizes the efforts of those behind K-pop groups. The Best Choreography award was won by Son Sung-deuk, an in-house choreographer and performance director at Big Hit Entertainment and Pdogg, Chief Producer at Big Hit Entertainment won the Best Producer award. It is noteworthy to mention that both the awardees have worked with BTS ever since their inception in 2013.
MU:E won the Best Art Director award for BTS' "Fake Love" and Bang Si-hyuk, the founder and CEO of Big Hit Entertainment was named as the Best Executive Producer of 2018 for "bringing up BTS with an outstanding capacity".
Earlier, it was announced that HuskyFox, the designer of BTS' "Love Yourself:Tear" album was nominated for Best Recording Package at the upcoming 61st Annual Grammy Awards.
BTS will next be seen performing at the last day of 2018 MAMA in Hong Kong on December 14, which will announce three more Daesangs at the closing day of the event.
