Two unidentified men shot dead Bahujan Samaj Party leader Dharmendra Chaudhary near old Nagar Nigam office in Bannadevi area of Aligarh, UP, on Saturday night when he was on his way to meet an acquaintance in his car.
Senior Superintendent of Police J Ravindra Gaud said that Chaudhary was rushed to the hospital immediately and was declared brought dead by the doctors there, reports PTI.
"The BSP leader's driver has stated that the assailants were two in number. They stopped his vehicle and shot him. We have recovered 11 empty cartridges from the spot which indicate that he received similar number of bullet injuries," Gaud said.
The police are awaiting the post-mortem report to confirm that Chaudhary suffered 11 bullet injuries.
Meanwhile, the police have begun investigating his murder. Though they are looking at every possible angle to investigate the incident since the motive is unclear, they feel professionals were hired to murder Chaudhary.
"The manner in which the killing was executed seems to be a handiwork of hired professionals," Gaud said.
Chaudhary was the party candidate from Atrauli assembly constituency in Aligarh district for the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. He is also a builder and partner in a construction company.
