The Virat Kohli-led India Test cricket team became the numero uno side in the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday. Team India bagged the No 1 spot after Sri Lanka clinched a 3-0 win record against Australia in their recently-concluded Test series in Colombo.
India can now consolidate their position at the top if they win their final Test match against West Indies, starting Thursday at the Queen's Park Oval. Kohli's men already clinched the four-match Test series against the Caribbean nation after winning two of the previous three matches.
Currently, India are on 112 points in the ICC Test Team rankings, while Pakistan are second with 111 points. Australia, who were the top side in Test cricket, prior to their Test series against Sri Lanka, dropped as many as ten points to move down to the third place.
The Aussies, led by Steve Smith, lost to the Lankan Lions by 106 runs in Pallekele, 229 runs in Galle and 163 runs in Colombo. The series sweep gave Angelo Matthews' side an additional ten points and they have catapulted to the sixth position in the ICC Test Team rankings.
The necessity now for India to win their final Test match against West Indies is prime because anything but a win will make Pakistan the number-one ranked Test team in the world for the first time ever.
Pakistan toured England earlier this year and managed a 2-2 draw from their four-match Test series.
