One person was killed and several others were injured in an explosion at Naya Bazaar, a crowded market in north Delhi, on Tuesday. The Home Ministry sought a report from Delhi Police on Naya Bazaar, Chandni Chowk, explosion.
Delhi Police's local team, special cell and the crime branch have cordoned off the area for investigation.
"Prima facie it looks like a firecracker explosion in a jute bag," said Virendra Chahal, Joint Commissioner of Police (Northern Range).
"As per investigation as of now, it seems like it was a firecracker explosion," said SBK Singh, Special CP, Law & Order, Northern Range.
An officer posted with Chandni Chowk police station had earlier told International Business Times, India, that there the nature of the explosion was not certain yet.
Reports have said that the explosion could be due to a cylinder blast, while some have said that it happened due to firecrackers.
The security forces are maintaining a tight vigil in the area for security reasons before Diwali celebrations.
