Vijay-Samantha's "Kaththi" is doing steady business in India as well as in overseas box office. The film has earned ₹82 crore in its opening week at the worldwide box office and it is likely to cross the ₹100 crore mark soon.
"Kaththi" has been performing well in the United States, which is one of the key markets for Tamil films. The film released in more than 90 screens in the US and took fantastic openings at the box office. The Vijay starrer became the first non-Rajinikanth and non-Kamal Haasan film to cross the $500,000 mark at the US box office.
It has taken the sixth spot in the list of highest grossing Tamil films at the US box office. The first five spots are occupied by Rajini and Kamal films including "Endhiran," "Vishwaroopam," "Sivaji", "Dasavatharam" and "Kochadaiiyaan."
"Kaththi," which earned $570,207 in its opening weekend (21-26 October) is expected to surpass "Kochadaiiyaan" collections (around $635,000) by the end of the second weekend and take the fifth spot in the list of all time grossers as well as the emerge as the highest grossing Tamil film of 2014.
With no big releases, the Vijay starrer is expected to continue its good run in the US. It will be interesting to see if the film will be able to cross the $1 million mark. So far, only two Tamil films – "Endhiran" and "Vishwaroopam" – have managed to achieve the rare feat.
While "Endhiran" has reportedly earned over $1.6 million, "Vishwaroopam" has also crossed the $1million mark with its steady performance at the box office.
The Kamal starrer took nearly a month to earn more than $1 million. Although "Vishwaroopam" had released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions, the Tamil version alone has managed to mint more than $1 million. "USA: #Vishwaroopam [Tamil] total till Sun: $ 1,038,373 [Rs 5.70 cr] ... #Vishwaroopam [Telugu] total till Sun: $ 200,011 [Rs 1.10 cr]," trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh had tweeted in March 2013.
It will be interesting to see if "Kaththi" will be able to beat "Vishwaroopam" collections in the US. Although it could be difficult for the Vijay starrer, it might stand a chance if the action thriller film continues to maintain steady business at the ticket window. If it happens, Vijay will join the league of actors who are in the elite club including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and several big Hindi, Telugu stars.
