Vijay's "Kaththi" has successfully completed 25-day run in good number of screens on 15 November, while Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" has created box office history in Tamil Nadu.
Kaththi
"Kaththi" has already emerged a blockbuster flick and has continued to do solid business even after completing three weeks at the box office. The Vijay starrer surpassed the ₹100 crore mark in just 12 days and minted approximately ₹113 crore in 19 days at the worldwide box office.
The film has recovered its worldwide theatrical price estimated at approximately ₹62 crore, reported Andhraboxoffice.
The Vijay starrer is listed among the top four all time highest grossing films in Tamil Nadu. It is Ilayathalapathy's second film to earn more than ₹100 crore after his 2012-blockbuster flick "Thuppakki." For director Murugadoss, "Kaththi" will be the fourth film to cross the ₹100-crore mark after "Thuppakki," "Ghajini," and "Holiday – A soldier is Never Off Duty."
"Kaththi" has managed to dominate the screens despite several new releases. The film has performed exceptionally well in overseas markets including the US, the UK, Australia and Malaysia. It has emerged as the biggest Tamil hit of 2014 and it will be interesting to see if the upcoming biggies – Rajinikanth's "Lingaa" and Dhanush's "Anegan" – will be able to outperform "Kaththi" collections.
The film is expected to continue its decent run at the box office for another few weeks until big releases hit the screens.
Directed by Murugadoss, "Kaththi" has Vijay playing dual roles and Samantha appearing as the female lead. The film also has Bollywood actor Neil Nithin Mukesh and comedian Sathish in supporting roles. The film's music is composed by Anirudh and cinematography is handled by George C Williams.
Interstellar
Christopher Nolan's sci-fi thriller "Interstellar," which hit the screens on 7 November, has created box office history in Tamil Nadu. The English version of the film was released in just 20 screens in places like Chennai, Coimbatore, Chengalpattu, Madurai and Salem.
"Interstellar" has grossed ₹1.32 crore in its first week at the Tamil Nadu box office, which is a record. There had been other English films, which have registered more collections in their first week, but they had more number of screens and their Tamil dubbed versions were also released, reported Sify.
However, "Interstellar" was released only in English language in just 20 screens in Tamil Nadu. There is a huge demand for the tickets and the theatres screening the film have reportedly witnessed 100% occupancy in the first week. The sci-fi film has emerged as a big hit in the state and is expected to continue its good run owing to positive reviews.
Directed by Nolan, "Interstellar" has Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Bill Irwin in pivotal roles. The film's music is composed by Hans Zimmer.
