Marathi film "Sairat" is rewriting box office history with its phenomenal collections. The film, which is shattering Bollywood films record at the box office, continues to garner praises from Bollywood celebrities.
"Housefull 3" actor Riteish Deshmukh even compared the success of "Sairat" with the biggest Bollywood grossers of all time. Riteish said that the box office collection of "Sairat" is equal to Aamir Khan-starrer "Dhoom 3" and "3 Idiots," which are the biggest blockbuster hits of all time.
"I loved it and apart from being a great film, it is also a great commercial success. In the last few years, we have seen a surge not only in the content but also in the commerce of Marathi films. I feel very proud that people are going out and watching Marathi films," Riteish told the Quint.
"Sairat is the first Marathi film to cross Rs 50 crore, and that's huge! And of what I hear, I am sure it will cross Rs. 75 to 80 crore. To keep things in perspective, when you talk about such figures in Maharashtra and the territory it belongs to, the success of 'Sairat' is almost equivalent to a Dhoom 3 or 3 Idiots," the "Housefull 3" actor added.
Nagraj Manjule's directorial has clearly emerged as a winner commercially and content wise. "Sairat" had a limited screen count, but despite all odds, the film turned out to be the biggest Marathi grosser of all time. The film was released along with Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor-starrer "Baaghi," but it pushed behind the Bollywood in terms of business at the box office.
"Sairat" has turned out to be the fourth biggest grosser of 2016 and the list includes "The Jungle Book," Akshay Kumar-starrer "Airlift" and Shah Rukh Khan's "Fan."
"Sairat," directed by Manjule, is a romance drama set against the backdrop of caste discrimination. The film features Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar in the lead roles.
