Rajinikanth's "Kochadiiyaan" and Kreshna's "Yaamirukka Bayamey" are doing rocking business at the Chennai box office.
"Kochadaiiyaan," which hit the screens on 23 May, took a fantastic opening during its debut weekend. The film has managed to hold well and mint decent collections in its second weekend as well.
The performance of the Rajinikanth starrer is super strong in multiplexes and the film witnessed average theatre occupancy of 85 percent during the weekend.
"Kochadaiiyaan" is estimated to have earned ₹4.30 crore in ten days at the Chennai box office, reported Behindwoods. As always, the superstar has managed to pull crowds to theatres even in animation form.
The epic drama is India's first 3D film to have used photo realistic motion capturing techniques. The film was released in six languages including Telugu and Hindi. While the Tamil version is doing well, the Telugu and the Hindi versions have failed to set the cash registers ringing.
In overseas markets, "Kochadaiiyaan" (Tamil) is doing decent business, but "Vikramasimha" (Telugu) and the Hindi versions didn't make any impact. The Rajinikanth starrer is facing strong competition from Telugu film "Manam" in the US.
"Yaamirukka Bayamey"
Horror comedy "Yaamiruka Bayamey," directed by debutant Deekay, is holding well in theatres even after three weeks of its release.
The film, which released on 9 May, took a decent start in its opening weekend and positive word of mouth helped it fetch good collections at the box office.
It has turned out to be a profitable venture for its makers. The film is estimated to have grossed ₹2.10 crore so far at the Chennai box office.
"Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham" ("VPA")
Santhanam starrer "Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham" released on 10 May (Saturday) and kicked off on a good note in the first weekend.
The comedy entertainer received positive feedback from critics as well as from the audience. It did well in the first week and managed to sustain its business in the second week despite facing stiff competition from "Yaamirukka Bayamey."
However, the film's collections have dropped since the third week owing to new releases. Apparently, "Kochadaiiyaan" has largely affected the business of "VPA" and the film has minted ₹1.85 crore at the end of the fourth weekend (30 May to 1 June).
With audience preferring to watch "Yaamirukka Bayamey" and "Kochadaiiyaan," the Santhanam starrer is almost out of the race.
New Releases
Five Tamil films including "Poovarasam Pee Pee", "Adhu Vera Idhu Vera", "Hogenakal", "Amma Amma" and "Kalpana House" hit the screens on 30 May.
Of all these small budget films, only "Poovarasam Pee Pee" gained some attention from the audience. However, the film took a below average opening in its first weekend and minted ₹2.20 lakh in Chennai.
This Friday (6 June), Vemal-Lakshmi Menon's "Manjapai" is all set to hit theatres. The film, directed by Naveen Raghavan, has Rajkiran and Prathap Pothen in pivotal roles. Lingusamy's Thirupathi Brothers is distributing the comedy drama flick and is expected to bag enough number of screens for its release.
