"Yaariyan" starring newcomers has opened to a better response at the box office, compared to Madhuri Dixit Nene's "Dedh Ishqiya".
Both films were released on the same day (10 January) and had a similar opening in the morning shows. However, Divya Khosla's directorial debut "Yaariyan" picked up in the evening and night shows.
Despite getting mostly negative reviews from critics, the film made a business of around ₹6 crore from its first Friday, according to boxofficeindia. [Read the critics review here]
The film, which mostly targets the youth, did pretty well in Mumbai and central India circuits.
"Smash hit music + terrific promotion + youth factor = Fantastic start at the BO. #Yaariyan," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.
Though the film had a decent opening, it remains to be seen whether it will survive the weekend.
"Yaariyan" features Himanshu Kohli, Dev Sharma, Serah Singh, Rakul Preet Singh, Nicole Faria, Deepti Naval and Gulshan Grover in main roles.
Madhuri's "Dedh Ishqiya", a sequel to 2010's "Ishqiya", had a mediocre opening at the box office, despite getting rave reviews. [Read the critics review here]
The comedy thriller failed to pick up at the box office in the second half of Friday. The film on its first Friday could only make a business of approximately ₹3.5 crore.
However, the film is expected to pick up during the weekend due to strong word of mouth.
"#DedhIshqiya has had a slow start, but carries strong word of mouth. Should pick up towards evening shows," Adarsh said.
"Dedh Ishqiya", directed by Abhishek Chaubey, features Madhuri, Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi, Huma Qureshi and Vijay Raaz in important roles.
