Aamir Khan's "PK" is all set for a big release on 19 December and there are huge expectations on the film as it marks the collaboration of Aamir and director Raj Kumar Hirani, post the grand success of their last release "3 Idiots."
Trade experts and fans are looking forward to see how the film fares at the box office. Aamir Khan's films are known to set new benchmarks. The actor's 2008-release "Ghajini" started the ₹100-crore club, which has now become passé. His 2009-release "3 Idiots" started the ₹200-crore club, which has currently become the trend of sorts for the big releases.
The actor's last release "Dhoom 3" was expected to enter the ₹300-crore club, but the film failed to do so although it managed to cross the ₹250 crore mark. "Dhoom 3" minted over ₹283 crore at the Indian box office and still remains the highest grossing film of all time.
Several big films, which hit the screens this year including Salman Khan's "Kick," Hrithik Roshan's "Bang Bang" and Shah Rukh Khan's "Happy New Year" were expected to cross the ₹300 crore club.
However, none of the films managed to cross the ₹300 crore mark. While "Kick" is still the highest grossing film of 2014 with ₹233 crore, "Happy New Year" is the second highest grosser with ₹203 crore and "Bang Bang" is in the third spot with ₹181 crore.
Now, all eyes will be on "PK", which will be releasing in a few days. The Aamir starrer is expected to create new records and enter the ₹300 crore club. The film is expected to be released in around 4,000 screens worldwide and is likely to dominate the screens. With no big Hindi releases, "PK" will have an open run at the box office in northern circuits, though it might face competition from regional and Hollywood films in southern and overseas markets.
The Aamir starrer is likely to take big openings at the worldwide box office. The Christmas holidays will work in the film's favour and help in registering huge collections. Christmas has proved to be a lucky period for Aamir considering that his last release "Dhoom 3" was a massive hit at the box office.
"PK" teasers and the songs have generated a strong positive buzz surrounding the project. It will be interesting to see if the Aamir starrer strikes gold at the box office.
Directed by Hirani, "PK" has Anushka Sharma, Sanjay Dutt and Sushant Singh Rajput in pivotal roles. The film is produced by Vinod Chopra Films, Rajkumar Hirani Films and UTV Motion Pictures.
