Critics might have praised Anurag Kashyap's "Ugly", but the box office response is very dull. The opening day collection of the Ronit Roy starrer is just ₹40 lakh.
"Ugly", released in limited screens, has got rave reviews from critics upon its release, but since it was not promoted on a large scale, it affected the opening day collection.
The dark thriller also faced competition from Aamir Khan's "PK" film at the domestic box office. However, Surveen Chawla, who plays a C-grade item girl in the movie, believes that the film will grow with word-of-mouth.
"I am a huge fan of Rajkumar Hirani and both the films are extremely different. The audience of 'Ugly' is not same as that of 'PK'. 'Ugly' is film is for the niche audience. There is a different set of people who want to watch Anurag's films," Surveen told IANS.
"I am certain that 'Ugly' will grow through word of mouth," she added.
Meanwhile, Aamir-Anushka Sharma starrer "PK" will take the lead at the box office in its second week. The film will dominate the collection centres over new releases, including "Ugly" this week.
"PK" directed by Rajkumar Hirani has been doing exceptionally well at the box office, and is setting new benchmarks for other movies.
"PK has performed exceptionally well in India and many international markets, and with each day of its theatrical run, the movie is setting new benchmarks in many countries! Our distribution strategy ensured a wide availability for the movie across countries in all key centres," Amrita Pandey, VP and Head of Marketing and Distribution, Studios, Disney India told IANS.
"PK", which also features Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani and Sushant Singh Rajput, will enter the ₹200 crore club with its domestic earnings by second Saturday.
