"Mardaani" and "Singham Returns" performed well on first and second Monday at the theaters in India.
Rave reviews take the box office collections on a different note and Rani Mukherji's "Mardaani" is the latest film to prove that. After "Queen", "Mardaani" is the second film that has shown tremendous growth in its income.
After a slow start, the business of the women oriented film picked during the weekend. On Monday, it witnessed a drop, but it was normal when compared to big budget films.
"Mardaani had a slow start but the film's business picked up thanks to word-of-mouth. One needs to see how it will perform this week," exhibitor Rajesh Thadani told Mid-Day.
In its four days, "Mardaani" raked in ₹16.89 crore from domestic box office.
The four days breakup of the film is: Friday ₹3.46 crore, Saturday ₹4.75 crore, Sunday ₹6.25 crore and Monday ₹2.43 crore.
With "Mardaani" going tax free in Madhya Pradesh, it is expected to fetch in more money from collection centers.
"Singham Returns"
Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer "Singham Returns" had a super strong second Monday and it managed to overshadow the first Monday collection of "Mardaani".
The action drama film minted ₹2.68 crore on its second Monday, compared to the latter's ₹2.43 crore. "Singham Returns" is climbing the box office chart with its superb collection.
It has become Devgn's highest grosser film till now with ₹130 crore. Trade analysts believe that the film would cross the ₹150 crore mark at the box office by the end of its second week.
However, it is unlikely that the film will cross the ₹150 crore mark, as its collection declined in the second week.
"One expected it to rake in ₹200 crore but there was a drop in its second week collections. With Ganesh Chaturthi around the corner, we don't know how it will fare in the coming days," Thadani said about "Singham Returns".
