Sivakarthikeyan starrer "Rajini Murugan" has fared well at some overseas centres, while other Pongal releases like "Tharai Thappattai" and "Kathakali" have struggled to post good business at the box office.
"Rajini Murugan" has done a business of Rs 79.91 lakh (£82,647) in the UK and Ireland box office, reports Bollywood Hungama. It was played in 13 screens in the second weekend and managed to pull a decent crowd.
While Vishal Krishna's "Kathakali" has minted Rs 8.28 lakh from one screen, Sasikumar's "Tharai Thappattai" has earned Rs 10.18 lakh from two screens by the end of its second weekend from the UK and Ireland box office.
In US, "Rajini Murugan" has collected Rs 68.90 lakh till date, whereas "Kathakali" and "Tharai Thappattai" have raked in Rs 8.56 lakh and Rs 9.94 lakh, respectively, claims Tamilboxoffice1 website.
In Australia, "Rajini Murugan" was played in eight screens and by the end of second weekend the total collection of the film stands at Rs 18.4 lakh. Bala directorial "Tharai Thappattai" has raked in Rs 12.58 lakh. But the performance of "Kathakali" is not up to the mark.
However, "Rajini Murugan" has come out with flying colours in Malaysia, one of the biggest overseas markets for Tamil films. The Kollywood film, which had collected Rs 81.96 lakh in the first weekend, has ended its second weekend by doing a total business of Rs 1.36 crore.
Meanwhile, "Rajini Murugan" has emerged victorious at the Tamil Nadu box office. In Chennai alone, the film has minted Rs 2.42 crore and the industry has declared the Sivakarthikeyan starrer as the first hit of 2016. Not only the producer, but also the distributors and exhibitors have earned good revenue from this Tamil flick.
It has to be seen whether the release of forthcoming films like "Aranmanai 2" and "Irudhi Suttru" would slow down the collection of "Rajini Murugan".
