"Puli" is one of the big-budget movies of South India. In terms of the scale of production and promotion, the Chimbu Devan-directed fantasy-adventure film is almost equal to "Baahubali: the Beginning". Vijay, who is one of the most popular heroes of South India, has played the lead role in the film and his association had soared up the expectations sky high.
In addition, "Puli" marks the comeback of Sridevi and Kannada Superstar Sudeep's debut in Kollywood. Its promos had generated a lot of positive buzz for the movie. After considering these factors, the trade analysts in South had predicted that the Vijay starrer will surely shatter at least a few records of "Baahubali" in its four-day extended first weekend.
The premiere shows of "Puli", which were scheduled to be held in international markets, were cancelled due to the financial issues. So, the film could not beat the record of "Baahubali", which has raked in over $1 million at the US box office in paid previews.
The release of "Puli" was delayed by half day in Tamil Nadu and one-and-a-half-day in other parts of India. Hence, the Vijay starrer could not beat the opening day record of "Baahubali", which has collected approximately Rs 65+ crore at the worldwide box office on the the first day.
"Baahubali" has collected approximately Rs 165.1 crore gross at the worldwide box office in its opening weekend (3 days), whereas "Puli" has fallen back in beating this record with a big margin. In fact, its collection is a little more than one-third of the business of "Baahubali". The Vijay starrer has grossed approximately Rs 64.2 crore at the global box office in its four-day extended first weekend.
"Puli" has been successful in smashing the opening weekend records of "Baahubali" in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, but the collection of the SS Rajamouli directorial is way ahead of the Vijay starrer in other regions.
