Salman Khan starrer "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" emerged as the winner among all Indian movies at the US box office last weekend. Indeed, the Hindi movie has beaten other big Diwali releases like "Vedalam" and "Thoongavanam".
"Prem Ratan Dhan Payo", which stars Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor in the lead roles, has made a business of $2,241,915 (Rs 14.79 crore) from 286 screens in the opening weekend. The star power of Salman Khan was in full display as his film witnessed incredible occupancy in theatres in the first weekend. The film is directed by Sooraj Barjatya.
Kamal Haasan's Tamil movie "Thoongavanam" is in the second place at the US box office among the Indian movies. The crime-thriller has raked in $419,578 (Rs 2.76 crore) in the opening weekend. The film was released in 80 screens and it has performed better than Ajith's "Vedalam", which has overpowered Haasan's film in most of the centres.
It does not come as a surprise as "Thoongavanam" is mainly targeted at urban audience. The film stars Kamal Haasan, Trisha Krishnan and Prakash Raj in important roles.
"Vedalam" has minted $264,141 (Rs 1.74 crore) from 71 screens. This movie, which has Shruthi Haasan in the female lead role, is written and directed by Siruthai Siva.
Telugu movie "Akhil" is in the fourth position by raking in $160,645 (Rs 1.06 crore). The movie was released in massive 107 screens but due to the negative word-of-mouth, the flick could not make record-breaking business. It is the debut movie of Telugu superstar Nagarjuna's son Akhil.
It is followed by Malayalam movie "Pathemari", which has earned Rs 14.74 lakh by the end of its fourth weekend. Telugu film "Kanche" (Rs 3.47 crore till date), Malayalam film "Rani Padmini" (Rs 2.82 lakh), "Ennu Ninte Moidheen" (Rs 69.97 lakh till date) and several other Indian films were screened in the US last weekend.
