Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani's much-talked about film "PK" has opened to superb response and amassed fantastic figures at the box office in the first weekend, but it has failed to beat records of hit films such as "Dhoom 3", "Happy New Year", "Singham Returns" and "Bang Bang"
Released in around 5000 screens in the domestic market, "PK" collected ₹26.63 crore on Friday. The movie showed decent growth and raked in ₹30.34 crore on Saturday and ₹38.24 crore on Sunday. It has collected total of ₹95.21 crore at the Indian box office in the first weekend.
"PK", which graced over 600 cinema halls in the international markets, has collected ₹47.6 crore ($7.68 million) at the overseas box office in its opening weekend. Its three-day worldwide total stands at ₹142.81 crore. Despite having superb numbers, the film has failed to set any new record at the box office.

Aamir Khan's last outing "Dhoom 3" holds six records in its opening weekend. With its first day collection of ₹36 crore, the film was the biggest opener for Aamir, and the biggest opener during Christmas season. Having collected ₹107+ crore in three days, it was Aamir's fastest ₹100 crore grosser and highest grosser in the opening weekend.
Dhoom 3 collected ₹62.95 crores ($10.17 million) at the overseas Box Office in the first weekend. It became the biggest opener as well all time highest grosser in the international market in the opening weekend. With its three-day worldwide collection ₹170+ crore, it is the highest grosser in the global market in the opening weekend
Shah Rukh Khan's Happy New Year collected ₹44+ crores on the first day and ₹108.86 crore in the first weekend in the domestic box office. It became the biggest opener of 2014, biggest opener on non-holiday release, biggest opener of all time and highest grosser in the opening weekend in 2014 as well as all time.
Ajay Devgn's "Singham Returns" and Hrithik Roshan's "Bang Bang" collected Happy New Year ₹32 crore and ₹27.54 crore respectively at the Indian box office on the first day of their release. They have landed in the second and third place in the list of 10 biggest openers of 2014, while "PK" graced the fourth spot.
"PK" has had good amount of hype, promotion, positive word and better volume of release than "Dhoom 3," "Happy New Year", "Singham Returns" and "Bang Bang". Before its release, trade analysts in B-Town had predicted that the film would erase all the old records and set its own brand new benchmarks, but it has failed to beat many old records.
