Rani Mukherji's "Mardaani" opened to good reviews, but the same was not reflected on box office. The opening day box office collection of the women centric film was below average.
On the other side, "Singham Returns" dominated the collection centers and also broke Salman Khan's "Jai Ho" lifetime total record.
Mardaani
As per early estimates, Mukherji's women centric film earned approximately ₹3 crore from more than 1200 screens in India, according to Box Office India.
Despite promotions and positive reviews, the film opened with low occupancy in theaters across India. The film registered decent occupancy during morning shows, which picked up during evening shows.
Although the collection is low, the film had performed better than other women oriented films including "Queen", "Dedh Ishqiya" and "Gulaab Gang" released this year.
But "Mardaani" has tough weekend ahead. The film has to show tremendous growth at the collection centers during the weekend to take its first week total on a decent note and also to earn the production cost.
The reviews are in the favour of the film, but the film will show positive growth in its business only on the word of mouth.
Singham Returns
Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer "Singham Returns" fared better than new releases on its second Friday. "Singham Returns" earned around ₹4 crore on second Friday and took its total income to more than ₹116.59 crore, according to Koimoi.com.
With this, the film broke Salman's "Jai Ho" ₹116 crore total and became the second highest grosser film of the year after "Kick".
The collection of the film declined in the second week, but still the film minted more than the new release "Mardaani".
"Singham Returns" helmed by Rohit Shetty is expected to dominate the collection centers in its second week too.
