Karan Johar's "Kapoor and Sons" is slowly moving up on the list of top grossers of 2016 at the box office. "Kapoor and Sons," starring Sidharth Malhota, Fawad Khan and Alia Bhatt, is this year's fifth highest grosser at the domestic box office until now.
The Sidharth, Fawad, and Alia-starrer has accumulated Rs 35.93 crore in five days from around 1,500 screens in India. "Kapoor and Sons" has shattered the records of Sunny Deol's "Ghayal Once Again" and Priyanka Chopra's "Jai Gangajaal" to become the fifth highest grosser and with Wednesday's box office collection, it will break Sunny Leone's "Mastizaade" record.
"#KapoorAndSons Fri 6.85 cr, Sat 7.75 cr, Sun 11.75 cr, Mon 5.08 cr, Tue 4.50 cr. Total: ₹ 35.93 cr. India biz. #WinningHearts. #WinningBO," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted.
Shakun Batra's directorial film had a decent start and didn't show much growth Saturday due to the India-Pakistan match. However, the collection almost doubled on its third day due to positive reviews. The film had a good opening weekend and it will continue to fare well in the coming days.
"Even though it was a family film, it took a conservative opening on Friday. The cricket match hindered the collections to grow on Saturday but the positive word-of-mouth as well as critical acclaim helped the film's collections to nearly double on Sunday," trade expert Amod Mehra told Mid-Day.
"The film needs to retain the momentum on weekdays, but to its advantage the next weekend is a long one and will help the film to sail through. The towering performance by Rishi Kapoor immensely helped the flick's collections," he added.
