Indra Kumar's '"Grand Masti" has clearly emerged a winner with a grand weekend fetching over ₹40 crore and making it one of 2013's top weekends grosser despite a "A" release.
The adult sex comedy, starring Vivek Oberoi, Ritesh Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani, which had the fourth highest opening of 2013 with ₹12.5 crore has earned ₹40.18 crore in the first three days.
"#GrandMasti collected approx ₹40.18 cr nett in its opening weekend. Breakup: Fri 12.51 cr, Sat 13.21 cr, Sun 14.46 cr," trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted on Monday.
Despite the film being slammed by critics for its overtly sexual and depraving content, the film has scored a high with a limited release on 2,000 screens. It has successfully sidelined simultaneous releases like "John Day" and "Horror Story", which opened with meager openings of ₹45 lakh and ₹79 lakh, respectively.
The weekend collections of the Naseeruddin Shah starrer stood at around ₹1.50 crore, Its break-up of collections for the weekend is: ₹45 lakh on Friday, ₹50 lakh on Saturday and ₹55 lakh on Sunday.
Meanwhile, filmmaker Vikram Bhatt's thriller "Horror Story" fared relatively better. The film's collections are: ₹79 lakh on Friday, ₹96 lakh on Saturday, ₹1.12 crore on Sunday, taking the total to ₹2. 87 crore for the weekend.
The adult comedy managed to make good business overseas with the Friday and Saturday figures amounting to $200,000, which according to Adarsh was quite extraordinary.
Coming to "Grand Masti", the multifarious cast and double entendres have worked in the film's favour. But it remains to be seen how much the film fetches in the first week amid competition from Shahid Kapoor's massy entertainer "Phata Poster Nikla Hero" in the coming week.
