Venkat Prabhu's recently released comedy thriller "Biriyani" has registered a strong opening weekend, after having an average start at the Tamil Nadu box office.
The film has reportedly made a business of around ₹6 crore from 280 to 300 screens in Tamil Nadu, Behind Woods quoted a trade insider as saying.
The comedy thriller features Karthi and Hansika Motwani in the lead roles. The film opened to positive reviews from critics but failed to turn it into good collections.
The film faced some tough competition from Aamir Khan's "Dhoom 3" and "Endrendrum Punnagai" at the box offices, which were both released on the same day.
Meanwhile, the dark comedy thriller is also fairing well in the UK market. In just two days the film has minted ₹16.93 lakh (£ 16,737) from the UK box office, according to trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Jiiva's "Endrendrum Punnagai" has grossed in approximately ₹3.25 crore from 200 to 230 screens in Tamil Nadu, Behind Woods reported.
The romantic comedy entertainer, directed by Ahmed of "Vaamanan" fame, has managed to rake in ₹7.07 lakh (£ 6,987) from the UK box office, in just two days of its release.
Both films were affected by the Tamil version of "Dhoom 3" at the TN box offices. The Telugu and Tamil versions of "Dhoom 3" have grossed more than 7 crore in just four days.
According to entertainment industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai, "Dhoom 3" has netted around ₹4.75 crore from TN-Kerala box office in its opening weekend, which is apparently the highest collection for any Hindi film in that particular area.
It remains to be seen how much "Biriyani" and "Endrendrum Punnagai" will fetch in their first week after the intense competition.
