Actor Jai's "Naveena Saraswathi Sabatham" dominates over other releases in Chennai.
At least five films hit the screens on 29 November. Of those films, only two have made it to the list of top five films at the Chennai box office.
Chennai Box Office (29 November to 1 December)
1. Naveena Saraswathi Sabatham
2. Irandam Ulagam
3. Jannal Oram
4. Arrambam
5. Gravity
According to Behindwoods, Jai's "Naveena Saraswathi Sabatham" took a good opening at the Chennai box office. The film raked in over ₹1 crore in its first weekend. The average theatre occupancy for the film (weekend) was around 75 percent.
The film has pushed Arya-Anushka's "Irandam Ulagam" to the second spot. The big budget film took off to a good start on its opening day. However, negative word of mouth affected its collections in the following days. The film has earned over ₹4 crore in Chennai since its release on 22 November.
Apart from "Naveena Saraswathi Sabatham", the only other new release that made it to the list is "Jannal Oram." The film, directed by Karu Pazhaniappan, is a remake of Malayalam film "Ordinary." The Vemal-Parthepan starrer opened to average response on the first day in Chennai. The film earned over ₹46 lakh in its debut weekend.
Ajith's "Arrambam", which released on 31 October, is still running in theatres even after successfully completing 30 days. After spending a few weeks at the top spot, "Arrambam" has gradually moved to the fourth spot, owing to new releases in the last month. Hollywood film Gravity, starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, has taken the fifth position at the Chennai box office.
With several new films lined up for release, the list of top five films might get changed in the coming days. New releases are likely to affect the business of old films. This Friday (6 December), at least two films will hit the theatres. Prasanna's "Kalyana Samayal Sadham" and Arulnidhi's "Thagararu" will clash at the box office.
