Kamal Haasan starrer "Uttama Villain" is getting closer to the box office collection record of "Kaththi" in the US. By the end of the second weekend, the film was about ₹40 lakh away from surpassing the amount earned by Vijay's flick.
Ilayathalapathy Vijay's "Kaththi", which was released in 86 screens during Diwali, had earned ₹3.42 crore in the first weekend and added ₹36 lakh in the second, to take the total to ₹3.78 crore.
But business started dipping after the second week and in the end, it managed to just cross ₹4 crore.
"Uttama Villain" was released in 98 screens and has earned ₹2.96 crore in the first weekend. It raked in ₹64 lakh in the second weekend, to take the total collection amount to ₹3.6 crore by the end of the second weekend. Now, it requires another ₹40+ lakh to beat Vijay's "Kaththi" record in the US. While Vijay's film had slowed down after second week, Kamal Haasan's film seems to be going strong.
Traders predict that "Uttama Villain" might surpass the box office collection of "Kaththi" by the end of the third week. This is mainly because the Kamal Haasan starrer has retained good number of screens and there is a strong possibility of the movie emerging as one of the biggest hits in the US box office.
However, one has to wait and see whether "Uttama Villain" can beat Mani Ratnam's "Ok Kanmani" in collections, as the movie has become the biggest hit at the US box office in recent years. So far, it has earned ₹5.40 crore and last weekend, it had about 10 screens. The film is expected to cross the ₹6-crore mark.
The performance of "Uttama Villain" is reportedly decent in Tamil Nadu, while in neighbouring states, it has not lived up to expectations.
