Both the films took a bumper opening in its first weekend. However, "Veeram" outperformed "Jilla" in Chennai and raked in better collections.
According to Behindwoods, "Veeram" grossed ₹3.04 crore from 741 shows in and around Chennai whereas "Jilla" raked in ₹2.72 crore from 714 shows. Both the films had average theatre occupancy of 97 percent during the opening weekend.
The Ajith and Vijay starrers are doing good business in the overseas markets as well. "Veeram" and "Jilla" have taken the Malaysian box office by storm. According to film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh, both the action-packed entertainers have done incredible business at the Malaysian box office.
"Tamil films #Veeram and #Jilla have taken Malaysia by storm. Mind-boggling collections!," Taran tweeted. However, details about the films' Malaysia collections are yet to be made available.
Meanwhile, the success meet of Vijay's "Jilla" took place today (13 January) in Chennai. The actor along with the film's team including director RT Neason, comedian Soori, music composer Imman, fellow actor Mahat Raghavendra and producer RB Chowdary attended the success meet.
Speaking at the event, Vijay thanked his fans for giving a grand opening for his film. The actor also had good words to say about Ajith's "Veeram", which is also running successfully in theatres. He said he felt very happy on hearing the success of "Veeram" and congratulated the film's team. "Veeram" and "Jilla", which released on 10 January as a Pongal treat for fans, belong to the same genre - mass, masala entertainers.
In "Veeram", Ajith's performance as a dhoti clad ruffian has won accolades from the audience. In "Jilla", Vijay's chemistry with Malayalam actor Mohanlal was appreciated. The films, which started on a fantastic note, are expected to continue their successful run at the box office in the coming days.
