"2 States" has now registered itself as the third highest grosser of the year, after beating "Queen". The Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor starrer has accumulated around ₹65 crore in eight days of its release.
The romantic comedy, helmed by Abhishek Varman, dominated the box office in its first week, and had better earnings than the new releases in its second week also.
"2 States" earned around ₹3.5 to ₹3.75 crore on its second Friday, to beat Kanaga Ranaut's "Queen" overall domestic total of ₹61 crore.
Here is the first week breakup of the film: Friday ₹12.42 crore, Saturday ₹12.13 crore, Sunday ₹13.51 crore, Monday ₹6.17 crore, Tuesday ₹5.60 crore, Wednesday ₹5.39 crore and Thursday ₹5.55 crore.
The film witnessed a drop on the eighth day due to new releases but will pick up pace again during the second weekend as all the new releases have failed to open on a good note.
If Ranaut starrer "Revolver Rani" picks up pace, it will slightly affect the business of "2 States". But otherwise, the Bhatt-Kapoor starrer will dominate the box office.
Meanwhile, though "2 States" is running strong at the box office, it is unlikely to touch the coveted ₹100 crore mark. To touch the century mark, the film requires ₹35 crore more, which is unlikely as the screen count has declined drastically.
But the film is expected to continue its good run at the box office in the coming weeks as well.
"Among the authors, Chetan Bhagat is quite popular with the masses. He has a wide readership base. The story of the book was something anyone in India will connect to. That's one of the reasons why the film did phenomenal business for an Alia Bhatt-Arjun Kapoor starrer, considering that both are relatively new," Akshaye Rathi of Rathi Group of Cinemas told Financial Express.
