Shah Rukh Khan's "Chennai Express" has been doing extraordinary business not just in India, but in overseas markets as well.
"Chennai Express" had a big solo Hindi release in more than 4,000 screens worldwide. The film has been breaking one record after another almost every day. Recently, the film raked in ₹100 crore at the domestic box office and became the fastest flick to hit the mark.
Until now, Salman's "Ek Tha Tiger" was holding the record of the fastest film to earn ₹100 crore. The spy thriller film reached ₹100 crore in five days, whereas Shah Rukh Khan's "Chennai Express" crossed the mark in just four days. The film has even performed better than the biggest hits of 2013 (so far) including "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" (it took seven days to reach ₹100 crore), "Race 2" (63 days) and "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" (24 days).
Let's look at how "Chennai Express" has fared against some of Shah Rukh's biggest hit films in the last few years.
"My Name is Khan" (2010), "Ra.One" (2011), "Don 2" (2011) and "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" (2012) are among Shah Rukh's films that went on to become big hits. Of these four films, three (excluding "My Name is Khan") are in the ₹100-crore club.
Earlier, "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" and "Ra.One" were tied at the top spot as they made the fastest ton (in 11 days) when compared with any other Shah Rukh film. "Don 2" came next with the film crossing the ₹100-crore mark in 16 days, according to Bollywood Hungama.
Interestingly, SRK's "Chennai Express" has performed much better than these films and reached ₹100 crore in just four days. The film has earned more collections during the opening day as against the actor's past releases.
Film Name | Opening Day collections (crore) | Opening weekend collections (crore) |
My Name is Khan | ₹8.00 | ₹30.00 |
Ra.One | ₹18.50 | ₹92.00 |
Don 2 | ₹15.30 | ₹48.39 |
Jab Tak Hai Jaan | ₹15.23 | ₹80.73 |
Chennai Express | ₹33.12 | ₹100.42 |
SRK now has four films in the elite ₹100-crore club. He is tied at the second spot with Ajay Devgn who also has four films in the century club. Salman Khan still rules the roost with five ₹100-crore films to his credit.
