Karan Johar's latest offering "Student of the Year" has taken the industry by surprise with its opening day collection at the box office.
At a time when several movies starring A-listers are staggering to run a decent business, "Student of the Year" witnessed a remarkably good opening - for a movie featuring newcomers in the lead.
"Student of the Year" has racked up Rs 9.25 crore in net on day one of its release, said reports. The film apparently opened to packed houses across the country, thanks to the rigorous promotional campaign by the filmmakers.
Meanwhile, the film is also reported to be going strong at overseas markets. "Friday: USA $ 110,000 ... UAE Thu AED 350,000, Fri AED 550,000. Fantastic growth in business," tweeted Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh. "UK £ 28,392 [21 screens yet to report]... Australia A$ 17,644... New Zealand NZ$ 6,146. "
The film's business is expected to take a huge jump over the weekend. Besides running a good business at the collection centres, the film has also received thumps up from many film critics.
Karan Johar has offered a bunch of handpicked new faces to the Bollywood industry through "Student of the Year". The story revolves around three youngsters played by newcomers Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt.
Varun and Alia are the kids of Bollywood biggies - the former is the son of director David Dhawan, while the latter is the daughter of Mahesh Bhatt. And Siddharth has been modelling before he sign up the movie.
The film is Karan's first movie venture in his over a decade film career without Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role and is his first movie in three years after his 2009 "My Name is Khan." The film is co-produced by Khan's wife, Gauri Khan. The soundtrack of the film is composed by music directing duo Vishal-Shekhar.
