Samajwadi Party member and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) corporator Rais Shaikh has demanded that civic corporators should get a 400% hike in their pay. Shaikh has said that the corporators should be paid a salary of Rs 50,000 a month, instead of the Rs 10,000 that they get currently.
In his letter to civic chief Ajoy Mehta, Shaikh said the effort put in by the corporators for the citizens should be honoured, and that the Rs 10,000 they get paid now was too low an amount.
He also asked that the travel allowance of Rs 150 which the corporators receive when attending general body meetings should be increased to Rs 500.
There are 227 corporators and five nominated corporators in the general body of the BMC.Though in 2012, the civic administration had made a proposal to hike their remuneration to Rs 25,000, it was never implemented.
According to Shaikh, the civic administration did nothing towards the implementation of the proposal even though the general body had already given their approval five years ago.
Shaikh has demanded the 400 percent hike as a compensation for the failure to implement the proposal.
"We work a lot in our wards and also spend on stationary or postage purposes. Such expenditure cost more than Rs 10,000 a month. But the civic body has not managed to pay us the Rs 25,000 that was approved in 2012. Now, the civic body should raise it to Rs 50,000 at least," Shaikh said.
The state government had recently increased the monthly salary of MLA s from Rs 75,000 to around Rs 1.5 lakh.
