In a shocking incident, a police sub-Inspector in Uttar Pradesh was arrested by his fellow officials for allegedly trying to rape a Dalit woman in the police station campus.
According to the media reports, the woman alleged that she was summoned by sub-Inspector (SI) Kamta Prasad Awasthi to his quarter inside Mal police station, on the pretext of an inquiry on a registered case.
Frightened by the unexpected behaviour by the SI, the woman raised an alarm, and her screams for help drew attention from neighbours and other police officials who rushed to the spot.
Officials reportedly said that as soon as they reached the place of the incident, they noticed Awasthi's shirt was torn. It's speculated that it must have happened during the tussle between the accused and the woman. Meanwhile, Awasthi reportedly locked himself in a room and had somehow managed to escape from the spot.
Later, the victim was taken to the police station where she filed a complaint against Awasthi. In her complaint she alleged that the SI used to call her often and asked her to come to the police station for an inquiry.
Police sources said that Awasthi was arrested following his immediate suspension based on the victim's complaint. Deputy Superintendent of Police Malihabad is heading the investigation into the case.
Violence against women is not something unheard of in Uttar Pradesh, where many women and minor girls were subjected to sexual assault in the past.
