Madonna's biopic Blonde Ambition, which won 2016's The Black List (Hollywood's annual breakdown of the best-unproduced screenplays), has been acquired by Universal Pictures. The script is penned down by Elyse Hollander.

Set 1980's New York, the story of the biopic revolves around the time period of Madonna's life in New York City as she was trying to release her debut album while navigating fame, romance and the dismissive attitude of the music industry.
The idea of the film title is generated from a tour launched in 1990 by Madonna who was on the top of her career at that time with hits such as Like A Prayer, Express Yourself and Vogue. In 1991, the documentary Truth or Dare documented the famous tour.
Michael De Luca, who produced Fifty Shades of Grey for Universal Pictures, will also produce the film alongside RatPac Entertainment and Bellvue Productions. It is still unclear whether the project is approved by Madonna or not.
Elyse Hollander's script garnered 48 nods to obtain the top position in 2016's annual list of the best unproduced screenplays. Apparently, Blonde Ambition is the debut script for Hollander who is currently rewriting a talent show for Universal Pictures.
Hollander also worked as an assistant to director Alejandro G. Inarritu (Birdman) and Fresh Off the Boat co-executive producer Kourtney Kang.
One of the top four unproduced screenplays on the list is This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman's Life Itself (starring Annette Bening, Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Antonio Banderas, Olivia Cooke, Laia Costa, Mandy Patinkin and Alex Monner).
Some of the previous Black List scripts that turned into Best Picture-winning or nominated films include Spotlight, Argo, American Hustle.
However, Blonde Ambition is not the first straight music related script to win the Black List. The first one is Bubbles, a script about Michael Jackson's pet chimpanzee, is also in the works with Dan Harmon as producer and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi on board to co-direct.
