"The Blacklist" over the last two seasons has focused on how Elizabeth Keen and the FBI, along with Raymond Reddington, pin down various Blacklisters. But what happens when the tables are turned? This is what fans will find out in season 3.
The story of Elizabeth Keen aka Liz (Megan Boone) and Raymond Red Reddington aka Red (James Spader) continues this fall after the dramatic season 2 finale when the FBI agent shot Attorney General Tom Connolly. The two of them are on the run and have been put on "FBI's most wanted fugitives" list.
The season 3 premiere episode titled "The Troll Hunter" will show what happens to Liz and Red while they are on the run and try to seek help from those whom they were previously putting behind bars.
The pilot episode will also explore the real relationship between Liz and Red. "I think people see how much Red loves her, and it is a confusing kind of love. I think that will have to be answered. How do you love someone that deeply -- no matter what the circumstances, but especially when the circumstances are mysterious?" said Boone in an interview with Zap2it (via iDigital).
"I think she loves him, but I don't think there are romantic feelings. ... I don't necessarily think it's a romantic love story between Liz and Reddington, even though there are people out there that really feel that's what they want," she added.
At the same time, "The Blacklist" season 3 will see the return of Liz's husband Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) and his reaction after he finds out his wife has now become a fugitive. The last season saw the two of them planning to escape together, but Liz decides otherwise. Tom is left behind alone in the boat, not aware of the fact that his wife had killed the attorney general.
Tom and Liz's relationship will be shown in a different light in season 3, reported Christian Post. "They're completely flipped in who they are and almost also in the way they approach the situation — she's now feeling the desperation of being a criminal and trying to operate in the shadows, and he's trying to come clean and trying to redeem himself in her eyes. Tom was sailing off to white sands and blue beaches and felt it was over. What he doesn't know is she assassinated the attorney general of the United States. When he catches wind of this, he'll have something to say about it and will not want to sit back," said executive producer Jon Bokenkamp.
Meanwhile, the synopsis hints a lot about the complex surprises the premiere holds for Liz, Red and the task force.
"The season premiere kicks off with the FBI hunting Liz (Megan Boone) for the murder of the Attorney General. Red (James Spader) and Liz are named to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list and set out on the run to evade capture. Red calls upon a Blacklister called "The Troll Farmer," to help them flee the city, while the task force must question whom of their own can still be trusted," reads the official synopsis (via Catermatt).
Watch how it all unravels when "The Blacklist" season 3 premieres on 1 October on NBC.
