At least 14 people including children were killed, after a bus and auto collided in Ahiyapur area of Muzaffarpur district in Bihar.
Earlier reports had said that nine people were killed in the accident. The death toll is expected to go up as many injured people are critical.
The state government has announced ex-gratia compensation of Rs. 4 lakh to relatives of victims who died in the accident.
The injured people have been taken to the Sri Krishna Medical College and hospital.
The accident took place on the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi marg near the CRPF camp in Jhaphan. The CRPF troops arrived at the location immediately after the accident to help in rescuing people and extricating bodies from the vehicles.
The district magistrate arrived at the location after scores of people living nearby blocked the road in protest. The bus driver reportedly escaped with the vehicle after the incident.
The auto was on its way to Purnia and the bus was heading to Muzaffarpur when the accident took place. Most of the passengers in the auto have died or are critical.
Some reports said that among the dead are two women and four children. Four bodies have been identified as Umesh Ram, Vishal Kumar, Neetu Devi and Premshila Devi. The children have not been identified yet.
The dead and the injured were residents of Purnia. They were headed to their village from Muzaffarpur.
More than 4,000 people died in road accidents in Bihar in 2014, according to National Crime Record Burea data.
