Season 8 of CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" ended on multiple cliffhangers with Amy breaking up with Sheldon, and Leonard and Penny going to Las Vegas to get married.
Amy broke up with Sheldon in the season finale after she got tired of the slow pace at which their relationship was heading. Although they have kissed and professed their love for one another, Amy tells Sheldon in the finale that being his girlfriend is exhausting, both emotionally and physically.
Amy ended their relationship saying she wanted some time to re-evaluate their relationship, leaving Sheldon confused as he was about to propose to Amy.
Showrunner Steve Molaro revealed during a recent interview that Mayim Bialik, who plays Amy, will remain a series regular, meaning fans will see how Sheldon and Amy navigate the tricky place their relationship has reached.
While nothing has been confirmed, speculations are rife that Amy and Sheldon will take a step forward in their relationship once he convinces her to get back with him.
"I don't know exactly what's going to happen but he's clearly fond of her. I don't think they're done speaking by any means. He's so fond of her — something is going to happen between them, I'm sure," Molaro revealed to The Hollywood Reporter.
As for Leonard and Penny, his confession to kissing another girl is not going to cause her to call off their wedding. However, a hasty wedding at Las Vegas might not be what's in store for Penny and Leonard.
"At this point, it's too soon for me to say, but I know that they're staying in that car and that car is headed to Vegas — but not under the most ideal circumstances. It's a pretty interesting place to be leaving them off," the showrunner teased.
"The Big Bang Theory" will return for season 9 in fall, and there could be a short time jump following the events of the season 8 finale. "It's too soon to say, but it does feel like if there is a time jump, it probably wouldn't be terribly long. But we haven't begun writing yet so I can't say for sure," Molaro added.
