Ranbir Kapoor's "Besharam", which opened to great expectations, is witnessing a drastic drop in its collections at the Indian box office.
After the success of Ranbir's "Barfi" and "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani", "Besharam" was expected to fare well. But the film failed to deliver despite having a talented team on board. The combination of Ranbir and Abhinav Kashyap, masala genre and perfect release timings (2 October) should have worked in the film's favour. But the action-comedy entertainer has turned out to be a big disappointment, said film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
"Besharam" had a good opening raking in around ₹21 crore on the first day of its release. But the film failed to sustain its momentum in the following days, resulting in lower collections. It witnessed a huge dip in collections on its second day and minted just around ₹7 crore. The film's business continued to hit rock bottom on day 3 (₹5.68 crore on Friday) and day 4 (₹5.94 crore on Saturday). But Sunday's collections witnessed a slight jump in its box office figures with the film earning around ₹7 crore.
The total five-day collections of the film remain low at ₹47.31 crore. Interestingly, "Besharam" has taken the fourth spot in the list of top five highest opening weekend grossers. The film has surpassed "Grand Masti" debut weekend collections (₹40.18 crore). [Note: "Besharam" had a five-day opening weekend from 2-6 October]
"Besharam" has also managed to beat the opening weekend collections of some of Ranbir's past releases including "Raajneeti" (₹33.63 crore), "Anjaana Anjaani" (₹20.51 crore), "Rockstar" (₹33.60 crore) and "Barfi!" (₹34.60 crore). However, the film did not surpass "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani" debut weekend collections, which stand at ₹62.11 crore, reported Bollywood Hungama.
Its collections are likely to drop further in the coming days. "Besharam" might rake in around ₹60 crore in lifetime collections, which is quite low for a film that had a wide release in more than 3,600 screens during the five-day extended weekend.
