The Mahala family at Salarpuria Greenage apartments on Hosur Road, Bengaluru, was in for a rude shock on Monday, when 15-year-old Monali Mahala jumped off the French windows of her 10th floor apartment.
Monali, a 10th Standard student of National Public School in HSR Layout, took the extreme step after having a frenzied argument with her mother for being suspended from school due to her friendship with a boy who was her classmate.
She jumped to death from her apartment at 3 pm and laid untouched for about 30 minutes as the apartment's security prohibited everyone from going near the body
Once the police was informed, the teen was rushed to Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital 45 minutes later where her father, Dr. Bijoy Kumar Mahala is a reputed cardiologist. After examination, Monali was declared brought dead, following which the body was sent to St. John's medical college for autopsy at 7.15 pm.
Monali had reportedly earlier been warned by school authorities over her blooming friendship with the boy, who is also a resident of her apartment. Despite the warning, she continued her friendship and the principal on Monday called her mother and suspended her from school for a day and half.
Appaiah Suresh, a resident of the 13th floor of the same apartment, told the daily that Monali after returning from school at 3 pm had a heated argument over the topic and locked herself inside her bedroom. Later she opened the French windows of the room and jumped to her death.
Monali was the only child of her doctor father and banker mother and the family is originally from Odisha.
A senior police officer told the daily that the deceased did not leave behind any death note and a case of unnatural death has been registered and that the case is being studied.
The chairman and founder principal of the school, Dr K P Gopalakrishna, could not be reached through phone for his comments on the matter.
