Two Trinamool Congress Party workers were shot dead in Bengal's Murshidabad on Thursday. The incident took place in broad daylight in Domkol area.
The two victims were identified as A R Ali and Haider Ali. They were targeted by unidentified people while they were sitting inside a local shack. Eyewitnesses said that the incident was shocking and they ran for cover after the shooting began.
AR Ali and Haider Ali were taken to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital after being shot. However, on arrival, the doctors said that they were dead.
The Domkol police has lodged an FIR against unknown assailants. Locals in the area blamed CPI(M)-Congress for the incident, India Today reported. Many Congress supporters reportedly joined the TMC in the last few months.
No arrests have been made so far.
During the assembly elections in April 2016, violence had marred the voting process in the Domkol area. The CPI(M)-Congress and Trinamool rivalry has been the cause of unrest even in recent months. It also has a long history of political violence between Congress and CPI(M) in the area.
