Barcelona beat Benfica 2 - 0 in their Champions League Group G second match on Tuesday night but the victory was marred by captain Carles Puyol's injury.
Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas scored a goal apiece to ensure a win for Barcelona but defender Puyol, who has just returned to the team after nursing an injury, suffered elbow dislocation and was carried out of the ground on a stretcher in the 78th minute.
Alexis Sanchez scored the opener for Barcelona in the 6th minute from Lionel Messi's cross. Fabregas doubled the score in the 56th minute, sending Messi's pass into Artur's net.
Messi did not score on Tuesday night but he was the architect of both goals.
Benfica's striker Lima almost leveled the score in the first half but Victor Valdez denied him a goal with a brilliant save. The Portuguese team looked weak in the defense without Luisao, who is serving a two-month ban for pushing a referee in a friendly match.
Sergio Busquets was shown the red card just a few minutes before the match ended for basting the ball in a tackle with Maxi Pereira.
Puyol's injury is a big setback for Barcelona as he won't be available for the La Liga match against arch rivals Real Madrid at the Nou Camp on Sunday. The match against Benfica was his first game after recovering from a knee injury.
The win on Tuesday night has ensured six points for Barcelona on the score table of the Champions League 2012-13. They have three points from their opening match win against Spartak Moscow. On the other hand, SL Benfica has only one point on the table from their 0 - 0 draw with Celtic FC in the opening match.
